Why should chained-dollar industry GDP components not always be summed to reconstruct total GDP?
Note
Chained-dollar real GDP accounts are index-derived measures and are not always additive across detailed component industries.
Chain-type real GDP uses changing weights to reflect evolving relative prices. As a result, detailed chained-dollar components can fail to sum exactly to aggregate real GDP outside the reference year; analysts should not impose simple additivity. This statistical property prevents analysts from reconstructing every real aggregate by ordinary addition of published components.
