What caution is appropriate when reading colonial New Jersey records?
Note
Colonial records and later historical summaries can reflect different authors' perspectives and purposes.
Colonial records often privilege officials, property owners, and literate settlers. A careful study asks who created the document, for what purpose, and which Indigenous, enslaved, or marginalized perspectives are missing. Triangulation across documents, archaeology, oral history, and descendant communities strengthens interpretation.
