Why can wetlands be valuable even when their services are not fully counted in GDP?
Note
Wetlands can provide flood-mitigation and habitat services that conventional market GDP does not price comprehensively.
Wetlands may buffer floods, improve water quality, store carbon, and sustain wildlife without prices for every service. Conventional GDP records only certain marketed activities, so ecological valuation requires additional methods and assumptions. Nonmarket valuation needs transparent assumptions to avoid both neglect and exaggeration of ecological benefits.
