Why might a payroll jobs total differ from a resident employment count?
Note
State labor-force surveys and employer payroll surveys use different populations and methods.
Payroll surveys count jobs at workplaces; household surveys identify the labor-force status of people living in households. Commuters and workers with multiple jobs can produce differences. The distinction becomes especially relevant for states with many interstate commuters.
