The Danevirke is a system of defensive earthworks and fortifications in what is now southern Jutland, Denmark, guarding the southern approaches to Danish territory. Parts of the Danevirke are of early medieval origin, and historical sources and archaeology indicate that King Harald Bluetooth undertook significant expansions and strengthening of these works in the 10th century to defend against incursions from the south, notably the German kingdoms.
