Lord Canning was the Governor General of India during the Sepoy mutiny. Charles John Canning, 1st Earl Canning, was an English statesman who was the Governor-General of India and later became the first Viceroy of India when power was transferred from the East India Company to the British Crown following the end of the revolt of 1857.
