On August 23, 1989, approximately two million people formed a human chain—known as the Baltic Way—stretching between Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius. The demonstration marked the 50th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and protested the secret protocols that led to Soviet domination of the Baltic states. It was a major nonviolent act of solidarity demanding restoration of independence.
