Sąjūdis (the Reform Movement of Lithuania) was formed in 1988 as a broad-based political movement that united intellectuals, activists, and citizens to demand political reforms, national rights, and ultimately independence. It played a central role in organising mass demonstrations, elections to the Supreme Council, and the political processes that led to the March 11, 1990 declaration of independence.
