Why can New Jersey residents’ earnings differ from output produced inside the state?
Note
Workers who live in New Jersey may work in New York or Pennsylvania, affecting the relationship between resident income and in-state GDP.
GDP is assigned to where work and production take place. A person living in New Jersey but working in Manhattan may earn household income in New Jersey while contributing to New York's production. Resident income data and workplace GDP should not be used as interchangeable totals.
