How should the New Jersey Plan’s constitutional influence be described?
Note
The New Jersey Plan influenced debates over equal representation but was not adopted unchanged as the final U.S. Constitution.
William Paterson's proposal defended the political position of smaller states during the Convention. The finished Constitution incorporated a compromise, not the unaltered New Jersey Plan. Historical influence is not the same as wholesale adoption of a particular proposal.
