Why is manufacturing value added different from the total sales of manufactured products?
Note
Manufacturing contributes to GDP through value added, which differs from the total sales value of all manufactured goods.
A manufacturer's sales may include components purchased from other firms. Value added excludes the purchased intermediate inputs so total GDP does not overcount the same economic activity. The double-counting problem is fundamental to national and state production accounting.
