Which location determines where production enters a state’s GDP?
Note
State GDP is assigned to where production occurs rather than solely to where workers reside.
Geographic assignment is based on where economic activity occurs. A firm headquartered elsewhere can still add to New Jersey GDP through a factory or office operating inside the state. Headquarters location and residence may matter to income or tax statistics, but not as substitutes for production geography.
