What geological pattern helps create Valley and Ridge topography?
Note
Valley and Ridge topography reflects alternating resistant ridge-forming rocks and less resistant valley materials.
Harder rock layers resist weathering and erosion while weaker materials are worn away more rapidly. Over long periods this can create parallel ridges and valleys characteristic of Appalachian terrain. This contrast is a useful example of differential erosion over geological time.
