Why should New Jersey coastal planners expect barrier islands to shift?
Note
Barrier islands provide sandy shore environments but are naturally mobile and vulnerable to storms.
Waves, tides, currents, and storms repeatedly move sediment. Fixed roads and buildings may interfere with the movement of naturally shifting sandy barriers. Long-term shoreline management must allow for sediment movement and repeated storms.
