Sąjūdis (the Reform Movement of Lithuania) was launched in 1988. It brought together intellectuals, activists and public figures to pursue political reform, cultural revival, and increased autonomy from the Soviet Union. Sąjūdis organised mass rallies and played a central role in mobilising popular support that led to the 1990 declaration of independence.
