How many States are in the United States of America?

The United States of America is a federation comprising 50 states and the District of Columbia, commonly known as Washington D.C.

Each state functions similarly to a small nation, possessing its own constitution and government. All states and their citizens are represented in the federal Congress, which is a bicameral legislature made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Each state has two senators, while the number of representatives is allocated based on the most recent constitutionally required decennial census.
