Dolmens are a common type of Neolithic megalithic tomb found in Denmark and elsewhere in Atlantic and northern Europe; they are constructed from large upright stones (orthostats) that support a horizontal capstone, creating a stone chamber. In Denmark the Neolithic period saw construction of both dolmens and passage graves by farming communities such as the Funnel Beaker culture, and these monuments are important for understanding ritual and burial practices in the Neolithic.
