Note
Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo was the first European explorer to reach the Pacific Coast of North America.
In 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese navigator sailing for Spain, became the first European to reach the Pacific Coast, landing at what is now San Diego, California. Cabrillo’s mission was to explore the coast for Spain, seeking new trade routes and resources. His expedition continued north along California’s coastline, documenting coastal landmarks and making contact with native communities. Cabrillo's exploration opened the door for future Spanish influence in the region, setting the stage for California's eventual European settlement. Cabrillo’s journey remains a landmark in North American exploration history, celebrated in sites like Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego.
