Note
The U.S. remains a net importer of oil despite increasing domestic production.
The United States continues to be a net importer of oil despite notable gains in domestic production. Even though the United States is now one of the world's top producers of oil because of developments in extraction technologies like horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, domestic consumption still outpaces supply. In addition to managing supply chains and refinery demands, the United States imports oil to meet its needs for refined petroleum products, such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. The United States continues to import oil to satisfy consumption levels and assure energy security, even if the deficit has closed over time due to a greater reliance on North American sources like Canada.
