Note
Natural gas has been the most used energy resource in the U.S. for electricity generation in the past decade.
In the past decade, natural gas has become the dominant energy resource for electricity generation in the United States. The rise in natural gas use is largely due to its abundance, lower cost, and cleaner-burning nature compared to coal. The advent of new extraction technologies like hydraulic fracturing (fracking) has made natural gas more accessible. As a result, many power plants have transitioned from coal to natural gas, which emits less carbon dioxide. While renewable sources like wind and solar are growing, natural gas remains the primary fuel for electricity generation, especially as a backup for intermittent renewable energy.
