Note
CERCLA (Superfund) focuses on the cleanup of abandoned mining sites and other contaminated areas.
To handle the cleanup of hazardous waste sites, including former mining sites, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), also referred to as Superfund, was passed in 1980. CERCLA gives the federal government the power to clean up hazardous material-contaminated locations and to make those who are at fault pay for the cleanup. In areas where hazardous substances like chemicals or heavy metals may still endanger ecosystems and human health, this rule is crucial for repairing environmental harm brought on by former mining operations. Superfund assists in managing and financing the remediation of these dangerous locations.
