John Hinckley confessed to trying to impress actress Jodie Foster when he shot President Reagan on March 30, 1981.
Hinckley was obsessed with Foster and had become fixated on her after seeing her in the movie "Taxi Driver." He believed that by assassinating the President, he would win Foster's attention and admiration. Hinckley shot Reagan as he was leaving the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., and also wounded several other people, including Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy and press secretary James Brady. Reagan was seriously injured in the attack but was eventually able to make a full recovery. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was committed to a psychiatric hospital, where he remains to this day.
