Note
The state of the fort's defenses before the bombardment was Poorly equipped.
Before the bombardment of Fort Sumter, the fort's defenses were inadequately equipped, which greatly hindered the Union's capacity to endure the Confederate onslaught. It suffered from a shortage of vital supplies, such as food and ammunition, and lacked sufficient reinforcements. Furthermore, its strategic location was compromised, rendering it susceptible to attack. Although Robert Anderson was resolute in his commitment to defend the fort, the insufficient preparation and resources ultimately led to its capture on April 12, 1861. The fort's frail defenses became a symbol of the early obstacles encountered by the Union during the Civil War, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced military strategy and logistics.
