During the Battle of the Bulge, the Germans first surrounded the town and put tremendous pressure on the American defenders, but they were eventually unable to maintain their hold. Along with other American divisions, the 101st Airborne Division's valiant defense proved crucial. The German army also suffered from the severe winter weather and running out of supplies. The trapped forces in Bastogne were relieved on December 26, 1944, when General Patton's Third Army began a victorious counteroffensive. The Germans suffered a serious setback when they were unable to take the town, which helped them lose the Battle of the Bulge overall and shifted the campaign's momentum in Allie's favor.
