Note
The code name for the plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, was "Operation Valkyrie."
The operation was carried out by a group of German military officials and civilians who opposed Hitler and the Nazi regime. The conspirators planned to kill Hitler and take control of the government in an attempt to bring an end to World War II and prevent further loss of life. The operation was led by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who planted a bomb in a briefcase under a table near Hitler during a meeting at his Wolf's Lair headquarters in East Prussia. The bomb was detonated, but Hitler survived the blast with injuries. The failed assassination attempt led to a crackdown by the Nazi regime, and many of the conspirators were arrested, tortured, and executed.
