Note
Bycatch refers to unintentionally caught species during commercial fishing operations.
When non-target species—like fish, marine mammals, seabirds, or turtles—are inadvertently captured during fishing operations, it's known as bycatch in commercial fisheries. This frequently occurs with equipment such as longlines, nets, and trawls. Since many of these species are essential to marine ecosystems and may contain endangered or immature populations, bycatch can cause ecological perturbations. One of the main goals of sustainable fishing methods is reducing bycatch, which can be achieved by better fishing techniques, stronger laws, and upgraded gear technology. Effective bycatch management contributes to biodiversity preservation, ecosystem health, and the long-term viability of world fisheries.
