One of the most important periods of World War II is recognized as the Battle of the Bulge, which took place between December 1944 and January 1945. The goal of this final significant German attack was to divide Allied forces and seize the strategically important port of Antwerp. In the beginning, the Germans were surprisingly successful in establishing a "bulge" in the Allied defenses. But the Allies rallied, launched a counteroffensive, and won in the end.
