William Tecumseh Sherman is the Union general known for his "total war" strategy during the Civil War.

His approach aimed to not only defeat Confederate armies but also to dismantle the economic and psychological capacity of the South to wage war. This strategy was famously exemplified in his March to the Sea in 1864, where he led his troops from Atlanta to Savannah, destroying infrastructure, supply lines, and civilian property. Sherman believed that such devastation would hasten the war's end by breaking the will of the Southern populace and forcing a surrender.
