Ramon Mercader, a Spanish communist and agent of the Soviet Union, used an ice axe to assassinate Leon Trotsky who is a Russian Marxist revolutionary, and theorist, in Mexico City in 1940.

Mercader disguised the ice axe as a gift and then used it to strike Trotsky in the head as he sat at his desk working. Trotsky was severely injured in the attack and died the following day. The assassination was carried out on the orders of Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, who saw Trotsky as a threat to his power.
