Following the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of 1939 and subsequent Soviet pressure, the Soviet Union occupied and annexed Lithuania in 1940. The incorporation of Lithuania into the USSR lasted until the 1990-1991 independence movements, despite periods of German occupation during World War II and the reassertion of Soviet control after 1944.
