The Livonian Brothers of the Sword were decisively defeated at the Battle of Saule in 1236 by local Baltic forces (including Samogitians and Semigallians). The heavy defeat led to the 1237 incorporation of the remnants of the order into the Teutonic Order's Livonian branch, reshaping the military-political balance in the eastern Baltic.
