The Sierra Nevada extends into the neighboring state of Nevada.

While the vast majority of the Sierra Nevada lies within California, a small portion, known as the Carson Range, extends into the eastern part of Nevada. This area still shares the characteristic features of the Sierra Nevada, including rugged peaks and diverse ecosystems.
