The Battle of Chickamauga took place from September 18–20, 1863, near Chickamauga Creek in northwest Georgia, close to the southern Appalachian region. It was one of the largest battles of the Civil War in the western theater and marked a major Confederate victory under General Braxton Bragg against Union forces led by Major General William Rosecrans. Despite the victory, the Confederate forces failed to capitalize on their success strategically.
