Note
The famous shipwreck of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald occurred in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975, claiming the lives of 29 crew members.
On November 10, 1975, the enormous cargo ship SS Edmund Fitzgerald capsized in Lake Superior due to a strong storm. Winds over 50 knots and seas of 25 feet were faced by the ship, which was transporting iron ore from Superior, Wisconsin, to Detroit, Michigan. All 29 crew members perished when the Fitzgerald went down, despite their best efforts to steer through the storm. The wreck is still regarded as one of the most well-known nautical catastrophes in the Great Lakes, and Gordon Lightfoot's renowned song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and numerous books and documentaries have been written about it.
